Every CA student works very hard throughout the year. But everything depends on his performance during the 3 hours of examination. Clearing the exam in the first attempt brings immense joy, whereas, failing that too with marginal marks brings frustration and dismay. However, there is always a hope of getting Grace marks in CA Exams by submitting the answer sheet for revaluation.
The Moderators in the evaluation hierarchy do award grace marks. As the moderators for each subject are independent they are therefore unaware of your marks for other subjects. None of the moderators know the marks of all your subjects. Hence, students often fail the Group by 1-2 marks and are left cursing their luck or ICAI.
Grace marking can be done only for a particular subject that too only on the basis of the answers of that subject and not by considering the fact that the student has failed the group by just a couple of marks. Grace marks in CA Exams are considered for questions that were too difficult to be solved in the examination situation. For such questions, grace marks are allotted as compensation or reward for the student who at least attempted the question and managed to arrive at some logical conclusion. So, students scoring around 38-39 have very high chances of scoring 40 marks.
Grace marks are allotted when the overall level of the paper was difficult and challenging to be solved within the given exam time. In such a scenario, the checking is somewhat lenient.
But this can happen only if there is some scope in your paper eg a theory question in which you have written substantially or a practical question where you have solved a few steps correctly.
That is why it is better to at least attempt the question, even if you don’t know the 100% solution.
ICAI Examiners never give you extra marks as he/she might land in trouble for allotting extra marks. They are generally unaware of the total marks as well because totaling is done by some other person.
So basically, there are three persons who examine your paper- the examiner, the person totaling your marks, and lastly the Moderator.
Sample checks are also carried out by Chief Moderators. But they hardly change the marks allotted by the examiner. They only play a supervisory role. Moderator is the final authority who actually decides whether the student deserves more marks or not. And their decision is based on whether the student has really understood the concept and has tried to at least attempt all the questions,
Conclusion:
- Attempt all the questions even if you are not 100% confident of the conclusion or feel you won’t be able to solve it completely.
- Checking is generally lenient if the paper is tough. So, instead of feeling scared, you should stay calm and try to solve the maximum questions in the best possible way.
